Novel Carbon Fibre 3D ‘Noodles’ / Fillers |
Biteam has developed a range of carbon fibre 3D ‘Noodles / Fillers for fitting in the deltoid or triangular cavity that is created when two oppositely curving laminates are laid next to each other in composites manufacture. These Noodles/Fillers stabilize the structure being formed with laminates and prevent accumulation of unreinforced resin, while speeding-up composites production, improving performance, and reducing labour and inventory costs. |

Novel Tapered I-Beam Developed by Biteam |
Biteam has developed the first integrated I-beam with a tapering angle of about 6°. The tapered I-beam displaying varying heights has Combination Architecture with ±45° reinforcement in the web and 0/90° in each of the flanges. The web-flange junctions have mutual through-thickness integration for increased resistance to delamination. The web tapering angle can be produced within reasonable limits to suit performance demands. The novel tapered I-beam has been developed for situations where the the tapered shape as such is desired or where the bending moment decreases along the beam’s length. It is thus particularly suited for aircraft wing structures, windmill blades, porch roofs, balcony supports etc. |

Innovation Award for Biteam at JEC, Chicago |
At the inaugural show The Future of Composites in Construction by JEC at Chicago, USA, Biteam has received the Innovation Award for its novel combination architecture I-beam under the Civil Engineering category. This Award is a recognition for Biteam’s sustained efforts for two decades in advancing the field of composite materials through development of innovative 3D reinforcement products. The novel I-beam combines +/-45° and 0/90° fiber architectures in its web and flanges respectively. Further, the web and flanges have a mutual through-thickness integrity which uniquely strengthens the junctions and arrests delamination, promoting a quasi ductile response to bending. Compared to traditional steel I-beam, it is 2-3 times stronger per weight, and absorbs 2-3 times more energy than steel per weight. These and other properties make this and other profiled cross-section beams developed by Biteam suitable as structural members for many different constructional applications, from buildings to aircraft. |

Biteam Develops Novel Z-Stringer with Combination Architectures |
For constructions requiring structural beams to bear relatively higher and different types of loads while resisting delamination, Biteam has pioneered now the Combination Architecture Z-Stringers, which have fibres in +/-45° in web and 0/90° in flanges. The web-flange junctions have a mutual through-thickness integration which renders the Z-Stringer highly resistant to delamination and functionally reliable. Such delamination resistant combination architecture results in relatively higher energy absorption and damage tolerance. Read More. |

Dr. Nandan Khokar Installed as Professor |
Dr. Nandan Khokar, Co-founder and R&D Manager of Biteam, was installed as Professor of Textile Technology for Composite Materials at the Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås, Sweden, on 11 May 2012 in a special ceremony. Dr. Khokar is internationally recognized for pioneering 3D-Weaving, Noobing, Tape-Weaving and Oblique Fabric-forming technologies. These processes and the corresponding fabrics are particularly suited for engineering 3D and 2D textile reinforcements for composite materials. His entrepreneurial spirit has so far lead to the establishment of Biteam (3D-Weaving) and Oxeon (Tape-Weaving, Oblique Fabric-forming) with a third one based on Noobing about to be launched. |

Biteam, together with its partners from the EU project MOJO (Modular Joints for Composite Material Aircraft), shall receive the JEC 2010 Award for the Process category during the forthcoming JEC Show in Paris. The worldʼs first industrial 3D-weaving machine for directly weaving 3D profiles was developed by Biteam in collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm. The 3D woven profiles have shown their applicability for the aeronautical industry through the just concluded EU Project MOJO. These profiles open up a new possibility for modularly joining different aircraft parts instead of the traditional riveting. The aim of MOJO project was to seek new methods for substantially lowering construction costs and weight of aircraft. The other partners in this project included EADS - Premium Aerotec, Dassault Aviation, Eurocopter, SABCA, DLR, EADS-IWF, VZLU, CRC-ACS, Secar and University of Patras. |
